The immigrants of the 19th century just wanted a fresh start. Many were poor, mistreated, or wanted jobs. Of course that would not sit well with the American public, just like it doesn't today because, who wants someone from a different country to come in and work for less and steal your job? Not trying to be offensive, that's just how people thought/think.
