High up in the stratosphere, the ozone layer absorbs most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation, UV-B, that would otherwise reach the earth. UV-B is damaging to plants and animals including human beings.

Down here on the ground, ultraviolet rays can be blocked by good sunglasses, sunscreen lotion, wide brimmed hats, and adequate clothing.
