The Hudson's Bay Company, named after Hudson Bay, which in turn was named after Henry Hudson, the English explorer who explored the bay, was incorporated on May 2, 1670, with a royal Charter from King Charles II. At one point, it controlled 15% of North America or over one-third of what is now the nation of Canada.
