Saliva is part of the body's non-specific defence against foreign invaders. Bodily openings such as the mouth, ears and nose are protected by substances to limit access to the inner parts of the body. The nose contains fine hairs, the ears contain wax, and the mouth's defence is saliva. These all reduce the amount of bodily invasion by blocking and limiting foreign substances entering the body.
