A bomb tossed at police in Haymarket Square in Chicago, when they were dispersing demonstrators who had assembled to support striking workers. No one knows who threw the bomb in this "Haymarket Affair" (or "Haymarket bombing", or "Haymarket Riot"). In the ensuing melee eight policemen died and an unknown number of civilians, from the bomb blast and gunfire from both sides. Eight anarchists were brought to trial in the aftermath on charges of murder. Four were put to death and one committed suicide in prison.
