Acts chapter 2 says that on the day of Pentecost, everyone that was in the upper room, was filled with the Holy Spirit coming down on them as tongues of fire. They began to speak in tongues as the spirit gave them the utterance. This was the Christian Pentecost.
The Jews also celebrated a Pentecost, also known as Shavuot, from the second century BCE onwards, and hence when the New Testament was being written. It recalls the story of the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. It takes place fifty days after Passover, just as the Christian Pentecost takes place fifty days after Easter, which originated with the Passover. Numbers 11:25 tells us that on the earlier occasion, the spirit of God came down on the seventy elders and they began to prophesy in ecstasy. The parallels in the two accounts indicates that the Christian Pentecost story was inspired by the earlier one.
Another Answer:
Called the 'Festival of Weeks' or the Feast of Firstfruits - also called Pentecost in the New Testament - has many mentions in Old Testament and 3 mentions by the name Pentecost in the New Testament. However the theme of the 'firstfruits' is threaded throughout the Scpripture. The 'firstfruits' of God (John 6:44) are those who are being called in their physical life and are relatively few - unlike the popular mainstream teachings. These will become the bride of Christ at the marriage supper described in the Book of Revelation.
