The words "church" and "churches" occur over 110 times in the King James Version. Other translations also use these terms. The Greek word translated "church" literally means "a calling forth," or, in other words, a gathering of people. For example, Acts 7:38, in the King James Version, tells of Moses being "in the church in the wilderness," that is, among the congregated nation of Israel. In another instance the Scriptures state that "a bitter persecution started against the church," referring to the community of Christians in Jerusalem. (Acts 8:1, The Jerusalem Bible) In one of his letters, Paul greets "the church in [Philemon's] house," the local congregation that met there.-Philemon 2, Revised Standard Version.

Clearly, the term "church" as used in The Bible designates, not a place of worship, but rather a group of worshipers. Acknowledging this, Clement of Alexandria, a second-century religious teacher, wrote: "Not the place, but the congregation of the elect, I call the Church."

The Church Fathers-Advocates of Bible Truth?

Whether you profess to be a Christian or not, your perception of the God of the Bible, of Jesus, and of Christianity may well have been influenced by them. One of them was called Golden-Mouthed; another, Great. Collectively, they have been described as "the supreme embodiments of the life of Christ." Who are they? They are the ancient religious thinkers, writers, theologians, and philosophers who have shaped much of today's "Christian" thinking-the Church Fathers.

Historical Background

In the middle of the second century C.E., professed Christians were defending their faith against Roman persecutors and heretics alike. However, this was an era of too many theological voices. Religious debates regarding the "divinity" of Jesus and the nature and workings of the holy spirit caused more than just intellectual rifts. Bitter disagreements and irreparable divisions over "Christian" doctrine spilled over into the political and cultural spheres, at times causing riots, rebellion, civil strife, even war. Writes historian Paul Johnson: "[Apostate] Christianity began in confusion, controversy and schism and so it continued. . . . The central and eastern Mediterranean in the first and second centuries AD swarmed with an infinite multitude of religious ideas, struggling to propagate themselves. . . . From the start, then, there were numerous varieties of Christianity which had little in common."

Quoted from the 2001 issue of The Watchtower,April 15th,Page 17-19.(published by Jehovah's Witnesses)

No other book took so long to complete as the Bible. In 1513 B.C.E. Moses began Bible writing. Other sacred writings were added to the inspired Scriptures until sometime after 443 B.C.E. when Nehemiah and Malachi completed their books. Then there was a gap in Bible writing for almost 500 years, until the apostle Matthew penned his historic account. Nearly 60 years later John, the last of the apostles, contributed his Gospel and three letters to complete the Bible's canon. So, all together, a period of some 1,610 years was involved in producing the Bible.

The church fathers were prominent theologians and "Christian" philosophers who lived between the second and fifth centuries C.E.

Since the bible was completed around 100 C.E.,it does not include accounts in it's canon of the early church you may be thinking of.

A:Acts of the Apostles is traditionally regarded as a history of the early Church. In support of Acts as a book of history, Sir William Ramsay stated "

Luke is a historian of the first rank; not merely are his statements of fact trustworthy...this author should be placed along with the very greatest of historians." This is now strongly disputed.

Uta Ranke-Heinemann (

Putting Away Childish Things) says that anyone familiar with recent scholarship would laugh at Ramsay's claim, and says that the whole book is a work of Propaganda aimed at Gentile Christians and Gentiles who have not yet become Christians. Hans Joachim Schoeps writes that

Acts has been believed much too readily, saying that

Acts

is only a retrospective view of Christian origins written by one party - the winners. The book of

Acts

is not a true history.
