Linux will easily allow you to install it along with other OS on a separate partition or even same partition through frugal install. You can even live boot from a CD which will not affect anything on your PC.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on your Mac and dual boot. Your Mac will look just like a Windows PC when you boot into the Windows partition. You will also have to install Windows Security on that partition to be safe.
If you are doing a fresh install by formatting the primary boot partition ie locally the c:\ drive then yes or if you r going for an update, then it will change the system files to its next version without disturbing the files and settings of ur system...

You could make a separate partition for Ubuntu, so creating a dual-boot. Or try the easiest method of using WUBI to install Ubuntu as a Windows file. This allows you to use Ubuntu without affecting XP or the hard-drive. Type WUBI in a browser and follow the instructions.
