Well, you're thinking of the Marines, although I'd question the "first official combat troops" bit. The initial two battalions of Marines were deployed in-country to protect airfields - not actually seek out and engage the Viet Cong and NVA.
Applicable to the US Army only; and ONLY during the Vietnam War (its different today):
The official "combat arms" of the US Army were: Infantry, Armor, and Artillery, and in that order (although some will argue about the order of Artillery & Armor). All other branches (Military Police, Engineers, Aviation, Medical Corps, Transportation, Ordnance Corps, etc.) were supporting branches.
The American Military pulled the troops out of Vietnam because of political pressure on the home front.
The inability of the United States to defeat North Vietnam reveal cracks in the seemingly impenetrable military might of the country because the United States were suppose to be one of the worlds powers and to have to fall to such a small country's military as the North Vietnam.
Some people were against the Vietnam War because young men were being drafted to fight in the war.
The last draft in the U.S. military was during Vietnam. The draft never really "stopped" because it was never really "going". It is simply a military policy that is enacted during times of need.
The Vietnam War did not succeed because of the terrain they were fighting in. Another over whelming factor was the restrictions that were put on the military to use their full capability to end the war by politicians

Because of #YOHAN

The Vietnam War happened in the 1960's and throughout the 60's. The Vietnam War is considered to be one of the most pointless wars in US history.
There is no question that President Lyndon Johnson was in charge of America's military effort in Vietnam, as Commander In Chief, and the war escalated because he escalated it.

The Korean War, The Vietnam War, Invasion of Panama, and Granada
No and he didn't get drafted for the Vietnam war because he had a wife and children but he later said if he got the chance he would have.
Because it changed what had been a simple guerrilla war in South Vietnam into an open conventional war in both South VN and North Vietnam. There was no open direct hostilities against NORTH Vietnam prior to the Tonkin Gulf.
