well if they are "great", companies will make what we call "signature basses". signature basses are created to fit the "great" bassist's skill and sound. so if you have a bassist that you admire or look up to then maybe you should check out if there is any signature bass of your admiring bassist :).
Fender, MusicMan, and Rickenbacker are widely seen on stages of many bands with famous bassist. Fender has be around for many many years so you can find many different alternatives and less expensive basses from fender. for MusicMan and Rickenbacker, they are usually expensive and only make few types of top quality basses. I personally own a MusicMan Sterling bass and i understand why many pro bassists pick MusicMan.
