The month of Ramadan starts at the first full moon and ends when the second phase of the moon appears. Until then, they fast during the day and only work if its essential, otherwise they'll pray. Before the sun comes up and after it goes down they will have a meal. Young children/elderly/sick people are not required to fast unless they want to. There can be serious consequences for those who break the fast (if they're not in any of the three categories mentioned).
