Labrador Retreivers, and Otterhounds are pretty fast swimmers, Newfoundlands are great swimmers as well and are bred to save people from the water.
Agreed with above, however irrespective of normal swimming ability or speed, any dog swimming should be adequately equipped with a dog life jacket as water conditions can quickly become adverse even for the most experienced doggie swimmer and even water loving Dog Breeds, such as Labradors can become tired swimming and in need of support from a doggie flotation device.

I have read that Newfoundlands, Labradors, Chesapeakes, Coton de Tulears, Portuguese water dogs and Spaniels do. I also read that basset and bull dogs can't. I would like to know more that DO because I am swimmer and would like a companion.

∙ 14y agoMy boxer loves the water but only when it is deep enough for her to stand in. She has jumps in to my pond and chases the fish. But, she has fallen in to my pool and sunk like a rock. She popped back up for a breath and sank again. She definetly does not like water above her head.

∙ 14y agoYes, the dog can swim. It knows the Doggy Paddle. I bathed my dog in the pool once and he started to do the Doggy Paddle. yes they can swim realy good my dog is little but when you put her in the water omg she is so fast...

However, water dogs breeds, such as the Labrador Retriever, Newfoundland and Portuguese Water Dog, tend to be the best at swimming, as these dogs are bred for this purpose. Many water dogs also have webbed toes and water-resistant coats.
