Comets are basically huge, dirty snowballs that circle the sun in irregular, elliptical orbits. Some comets have fairly regular patterns of orbit such as Haley's. If a comet bisects the orbit of a planet or other solar body, it can cause massive damage. Remember, it was the Hale-Bopp comet that struck Jupiter fairly recently, and that punched holes in Jupiter's atmosphere that remained visible for weeks.
