A Supernova can destroy anything in its path. Usually you can tell if a star is going to have a Supernova. Think of it like this, think of a city, country, or a state(USA) getting wiped out within a matter of seconds. Its crazy to think about it. You can die any second of the day.

Improvements.

A supernova doesn't really have a "path", but will destroy everything within its region.

Supernovas can be predicted by observation.

For the rest, the idea "you can die any second of the day" is just plain silly. There's no star near us that looks like going supernova anytime soon. This is an information website, not a chat room, so the email tease is probably inappropriate. Your choice.

How long would it take for us to see a supernova on earth?

That depends entirely on how far the supernova is from Earth. If it is our Sun going supernova, a little over 8 minutes. And a few Milli-seconds later all life on Earth would be gone. Any other star, it would just appear slightly brighter for a while and then disappear. It could take centuries for the light to reach us.
