Supplemental Dental Insurance Saves Money On Dental Visits?

Supplemental dental insurance, also known as a discount dental plan, is an inexpensive way of paying less money for dental visits, including routine dental check-ups, x-rays, fillings and teeth cleaning appointments. A visit to the dentist can cost a great deal of money for patients who do not have supplemental dental insurance plans. The cost of a supplemental dental insurance plan is extremely affordable, and the dental patient receives deep discounts for many dental procedures. Some dental plans even include discounts on periodontal surgeries. The National Association of Dental Plans has a list of companies offering supplemental dental insurance plans.

Does a doctor required to accept a patient's dental insurance?

I think you are asking "Is a dentist required to accept a patient's dental insurance?" It depends on a number of factors. If the dentist is a contracted provider for the particular insurance, he probably is required to accept the insurance assignment. There still may be co-pays and deductibles that the patient must pay. If the dentist is not a contracted provider for the insurance, he probably does not have to accept the insurance. Even if he does accept the insurance, the patient is still obligated to pay the difference between what the insurance pays and what the dentist's actual fee is. Unless a dentist is signed up to be a preferred provider, meaning he accepts the insurance company's reduced fees and other terms, the patient needs to understand that the dentist is not a party to to the agreement the patient has with their insurance. If you have lousy insurance with low benefits and slow payments, that is not the dentist's problem. If the insurance is provided by your employer, take up the issue with your Human Resources department. They can get action much faster than the dentist ever could. Many insurance companies are still using benefit formulations that were established in the 1970's ($1000-2000 max. annual benefits). Back then $1000 bought a lot of dental care. Today, it will barely cover treatment of one or two teeth in a year. Many times, the patient still must come up with as much as 50% of the total fees, even with insurance. In short, dental insurance today is a joke. Unless you have a large family, you're probably better off saving the co-pays and premiums and paying out of pocket for your dental care. If they know you are a strictly cash patient, many dentists will extend a courtesy and reduce their fees 5-10% if you ask. The cash patient is a preferred patient, because the doctor does not have to chase the insurance company for their money, sometimes having to wait three months or more to be paid. Another thing that patients need to understand is that the typical dentist has overhead costs of about 65-75%. When you have PPO or DHO type insurance, the discounted fees literally comes directly out of the dentist's pocket. Insurance companies do not share the dentist's fixed costs. Sometimes a patient will walk into a dental office and toss an insurance form or card across the counter at the receptionist, as though it is like cash. I assure you it is not. Filing an insurance claim FOR YOU is a courtesy extended by the dentist. His reimbursement does not go up, and his overhead costs do. He has to pay someone's wages to collect from the insurance company, and that costs him plenty. It is very much appreciated by the dentist and his staff when patients are courteous and understanding when it comes to problems with YOUR INSURANCE.

Should I invest in dental insurance?

If you visit your dentist regularly purchasing dental insurance would be worth the money. Being on a tight budget I would check with several providers to find the best suited for your needs.

Inexpensive dental care needed in the bay area but you have little money what can you do and who can help you?

Clarification needed: San Francisco Bay area? or what bay, what state or country? To find companies in your state that provide dental insurance or dental discount plans, go to the National Association of Dental Plans site (www.nadp.org) which has a directory of companies that offer dental insurance. The directory can be searched by state and you can select "individual" and get the list of just those companies that provide individual dental insurance in your state. The listing also tells you if the company provides dental HMO, dental PPO, dental indemnity (traditional insurance without a network) or a discount plan (not insurance but a discount off the dentist's fees who are part of the discount network).

Dental insurance works in Mexico?

There is no one answer to this question. It depends on the insurance company and the dentist involved. Few Mexican dentists accept American insurance. The ones who do have higher prices because it costs them more time to fill out forms and deal with insurance bureaucracy. In general, paying cash to a Mexican dentist will save you about 50-70% over the cost of US care. Dental care for foreigners is big business across the Mexico-USA border. Many resort areas also have dentists who specialize in treated patients from the USA

If An employee of a dentist has insurance and the employer files insurance and gives the employee all the money back from the insurance company Is this legal?

No. This would be not only be insurance fraud but would also endanger the license of the dentist involved. Plus if the insurance company ever found out about such a thing, the Dental Practice would have to close down, because no insurance company would contract with someone like that, ever again. If the State Licensing Division didn't revoke the Dentist's license, the insurance carriers no longer processing claims from this business would drive them out of business. The Dentist would have to start working at the 7-11 Store. Crooks are not Professionals.

I am wondering if dental insurance plans are worth the money?

I think that some dental insurance plans are definitely worth the money. I would check with my insurance company to find out what they cover in and out of pocket. Then you will be able to see how much you are saving or not saving.
