Using pacifiers can be very helpful in relieving teeth pain in adults just as in babies. By sucking or chewing on the pacifier it relieves pain from wisdom tooth growth or impacted wisdom teeth.
I myself used a pacifier to make it through wisdom tooth pain before I could get an appointment to have them removed. They work wonders on decreasing swelling and irritation in conjunction with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
They can also be used for psychological reasons, like not being breast fed, not being weaned off at a soon enough age, etc.
i used a pacifier on the young kid who wouldn't stop screaming!

You just can't do that.
You should always check the pacifier for cracks, tears and any other signs of use. Once you see that, you should definitely replace it.
Theoretically, excessive use of a pacifier could cause a change in the way your teeth are alighned. I don't know how sound the theory is or what "excessive use" is. But other than that and the possibility of teasing, it's okay.
