I have found through experience that believers learn nothing factual and merely interpret the words in whatever way they want.

Your question specifies 'believers', so critical thinking regarding sacred texts is basically nonexistent, rendering the mind incapable of filtering out the dross from the gold (if there even is any gold.)

If this weren't the case, there would be one and only one religion based on any one sacred text. The 13 different flavours of Christianity in my town of 6000 here in Alberta is ironclad proof. So is the sectarian violence all over the planet.

There is nothing to be learned from any sacred text. You can only learn about the minds of the followers by how they interpret it and how blindly they follow that interpretation.

Why are sacred writing important to belivers?

To answer that question you need to know: WHO DECIDES whether something is 'Sacred' or not?Do 'believers' get to decide that? Some 'believers' consider the Bible 'sacred'. Others do not.Or would 'the Writer' decide something is sacred, and then expect the readers to consider it 'sacred'?Actually, if Almighty God had the Bible written, then that's reason enough for 'believers' to consider the Bible as a 'sacred document' from the Creator of the whole Universe. So to answer that question from the Bible's perspective: Why are sacred writings important to believers? The answer would be: Sacred Writings are important to 'believers' so that the 'believers' would know what the Creator wants them to know; How He expects them to conduct themselves. They can learn about what God's ORIGINAL Purpose really is, when he created this thing called 'man~KIND'. Was God's purpose to inhabit the heavens; or was his purpose to 'inherit the earth'. The 'sacred writings' would reveal the Creator to his Creation.

How does a sacred text influence people in a religion?

A sacred text influences people in a religion by providing teachings, values, rituals, and guidelines for how to live a moral and fulfilling life. Followers often look to the text for guidance, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of their beliefs. It can also serve as a source of unity and community among believers who share a common faith in the text's teachings.
