a zit If you are a guy it's possible that they are just heat bumps (pimples) from moisture. It depends on how many you have and how often you get them. If there are several, it could be herpes or the beginning of genital warts. About 70% of the population have genital warts and don't know it. It is very common. However, when they flare up or are irritated they are much like herpes and show up like pimples. Herpes can get pretty bad if not treated but will inflame with much redness around them. Genital warts however, become more swollen without redness and they don't itch or hurt, it just grows much like a fungus. For a guy this is also not fun because you must have the warts treated just like a wart and have them frozen off or removed by a doctor.Women get a very similar set of symptoms but the treatment is inside and is treated the same way. Also their genital warts don't get as irritated if sexual intercourse is not often and they don't use tampons. But the case scenario is the same for both genders. If this is herpes, you can not be treated with antibiotics. Herpes is a virus that you will have always after contraction. There are, however, medications available to help manage outbreaks of the sores.

There are many possible explanations for one or more pimple-like bumps on your penis. These include normal anatomy, skin irritation or non-sexual skin conditions, sexually transmitted diseases, and other infections. Your health care provider can help you determine if these are a cause for concern by assessing your medical and sexual history, completing a physical exam, and possibly by completing some simple and painless laboratory tests.

Normal skin characteristics on a penis that may look like pimples can include fordyce spots, pearly penile papules, and skin tags. Most penises have obvious yellowish bumps that are the normal sebaceous glands in that area. Shaving bumps or folliculitis is more common as men shave the penile skin; these bumps can make it easier to get STDs are each is a skin opening. Pearly penile papules look like tiny pimples or hair-like projections, usually around the corona. These kinds of bumps will have been present for a very long time.

Skin irritation is most commonly triggered by chemical contact, such as use of spermicide or lubricant that doesn't agree with the patient's skin. Poison ivy may also cause dermatitis on the penis.

Non-sexual skin conditions that can cause bumps on the penis include psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis, and candida. Folliculitis may be due to shaving, infection (e.g. "hot tub folliculitis"), or other causes.

STDs can also cause pimple-like bumps on your penis. For this reason, if you have had any oral, anal, or vaginal sex or genital-genital contact, you should get any pimple on the penis checked out as soon as possible.

  • The bumps of herpes may look like pimples or blisters. They will not stay for long, disappearing within a couple of weeks, and are usually tender. Normally they aren't found all over the penis, but will be in a small group.
  • Genital warts are painless, and do not disappear as quickly as herpes lesions, lasting months or years. They may be flat, pimple-like, filiform (thread-like), or have a rough cauliflower-like appearance. Treatment for these is available from your health care provider. Treatment is optional based on the patient's preference.
  • Molluscum contagiosum is more likely to affect preschoolers and men in their late teens or early twenties. The bumps of molluscum are usually painless, white, and often have a tiny dent or dimple in the middle. Your health care provider can provide treatment.
  • Second-stage syphilis can cause pimple-like bumps on the penis or other areas of the skin.

It doesn't make much sense to try to diagnose a pimple on your penis over the internet. Maintain good hygiene, don't pop or squeeze the pimple (after all, the last thing you want is a more serious infection like cellulitis in your penis!), and make an appointment with your health care provider, family planning agency, or department of health as soon as possible.

The only way to know for sure is to go to your doctor and have yourself examined.
