Welcome to the club of the "Worlds most fussy pet"! They are great fun but need allot of TLC. This is something I suggest you get checked by a vet before anything, if it persists. There can be many factors that can cause lethargy but remember that Chinchillas are nocturnal. So are usually active only once the sun sets (even with indoor lighting). 1) Over stress can cause a Chincilla to reach near exaustion and collapse. 2) A recent change in diet and/or unsuitable food can cause an upset stomache and cause your Chincilla to appear "off colour". 3) Lack of dust bath can cause a Chinchilla to be a little lack lust. The first of these is by far the most serious here are the recommended solutions (always seek a vets advice if they percist): 1) Move the Chinchilla away from any load noises (TV's, Small Children, Big Children, Windows opening onto main roads) immediatley. Also insure that they are not disturbed during daylight hours while they are sleeping (this tends to make them cranky). If you allow your chin to have a run in your house NEVER try and catch them forcefully. This is a sure way of leading to collapse. I find that bribery works best...entice them to there cage with raisins or a dust bath (it takes the patience of an angel). 2) Check there droppings for any change in texture (they should be long and hardish) and colour (dark brown). Also check the Chins bum, there should be no droppings on there fur. If any signs are show immediately change the food back to what it was before or stop giving new food items. Also go easy on the raisins (only 2-3 per day). 3) Ensure the Chin gets a good 10-20 mins with their dustbath each day. Ensure that the dust has had all the droppings/hay/fluff removed (use a seive). Chinchillas are notorious for being really fussy about being clean. They hate being dirty or oily, so after you stroke them give them the option of a bath as they usually get the natural oils from your hand on their fur. But above all get it checked out with a vet!
