Sarcoids are superficial skin growths, usually benign, however no one is really sure what causes them. They are thought to be viral in nature. Sarcoids can grow back if not properly removed so it is important for a vet asses and remove them. They generally cause no harm to the horse other than cosmetically unless they involve the deeper tissues beneath the skin in which case they can be malignant (cancerous).
