Moving surface water may be used for irrigation, or as a means to power electric generators. The flow of the Colorado River is a good example of power generation. However, even Michigan generates electricity with what are called Low Head Hydroelectric plants. Hydroelectric plants can be from twenty to hundreds of feet high. As for irrigation, some rivers, like the Rio Grande, have so much water removed for crop irrigation that they are only a shadow of what they used to be.
