The best option if the rust is on metal:
1 - Prepare the area by removing any loose rust. Be careful if sanding or using a wire brush on pre 1960 surfaces. This is because paint coatings pre 1960 can be harmful, wear a mask, gloves and safety goggles for protection. Why risk it.
2 - Now the area is prepared, you should use a rust removal product - there is many out there. Ideally something with phosphoric acid if possible and I am not just saying that because of our products! Phosphoric acid is known in the industry as being the best and safest way to deal with rust. We spent years researching this.
3 -Once you have done the above, you want to protect the area to prevent rust forming again. This should be done by oiling or a primer being applied. The primer is the ultimate protection. Some people also don't realise that you can actually varnish bare metal! We have customers that do this, and it really is a great trick to know!
Hope this helps.
