They use 'echolocation' by various methods. On land it's generally done by a large truck that is anchored and then pounds the ground with a large hydraulic plate. -The echoes of this are picked up by 'geophones' around the area and a picture of the ground underneath is gradually developed. At sea a similar method is used,but using sonar signals.

Scientists can use sonar and seismic studies to test an area for oil. It is not always certain, however. To really find out if an area is rich in oil, drilling must occur.
