- Street vendor snacks in sold in the stands around Seoul. Sometimes 1,000 won can buy a substantial amount of these snacks, such as the red bean-paste filled bbong bung gyeong in winter (1000 won can buy 3 - 5, which can be quite filling). 1,000 won will also buy a hot-dog on a stick.
- A one-way ticket on the Seoul subway system a pretty good distance away (some 8 stops).
- A ride of comparable distance on a bus.
- An hour in a PC Bang (cyber cafe).
- 10 phone calls within Korea from a standard public telephone.
- A donut
- Two tries at an arcade game in a normal arcade.
- A wide array of cheap street vendor trinkets around Seoul.
- About 10 shots at a street shooting range.
- Three songs in a Karaoke booth.
- An hour in a Korean study center.
- Two small cans of soda.
- Two tries at a prize-spewing crane machine.
- Obviously, 1,000 won will not get you much outside simple pleasures, short rides on public transportation, and delicious snacks. It won't even get you a US dollar. But string several 1,000 won bills together and you've got yourself a pretty full day of simple and filling entertainment in Seoul if your tastes aren't too extravagant. At least cheap, if ephemeral, entertainment is readily available in all corners of Seoul, unlike other industrialized nations.
