Presumably you have no access to any menstrual products: tampons, pads, cups, etc. in which case the first option would be to buy yourself some supplies. In some places they will provide free tampons, if in public ask someone else for what you need, and if you're in school try asking a teacher or school nurse. If there's no way to get supplies just use tissue paper or cloth as makeshift pad.

It depends on where you are. If you're at school, put some tissue paper in your underwear, then go to the clinic; they should have some handy.

If you're somewhere else, do the same thing, put a tissue in you undies, and go to the nearest pharmacy to get some real pads.

*Remember to change your pad every four hours!*

If you are in a public place, usually bathroom have machines where you can buy pads or tampons. If you are not in a public place, but do have acess to a bathroom, a good subsitute is to just make a pad out of tissue paper. If you aren't near a bathroom you can always do the ol' 'covering up incase I leak' trick by tying a sweatshirt or jacket arounf your waist.

Firstly you look at ways of getting pads such as going to the store, asking other family members, asking friends, or asking neighbours. If you cannot get any pads then you can make your own makeshift pads using clean cloth or something like a clean facial cloth, you can also use toilet paper if needed.

There are various menstrual options:
Tampons:

  • Commercial tampons e.g. Tampax
  • Organic tampons e.g. Emerita
  • Soft tampons e.g. Beppy
  • Menstrual sponges e.g. J&P
  • Cloth tampons

Sanitary pads:

  • Commercial pads e.g. Always
  • Organic pads e.g. Natracare
  • Cloth pads e.g. Lunapads
  • Period belts e.g. Reddy's
  • Period underwear e.g. Thinx
  • Interlabial pads e.g. Labinni

Menstrual cups:
  • Silicone menstrual cups e.g. Divacup
  • Rubber menstrual cups e.g. Keeper
  • TPE menstrual cups e.g. MeLuna
  • Diaphragm as menstrual cup
  • Disposable softcups
  • Reusable softcups

Other options:

  • Free-flow/Free-bleeding
  • Menstrual release/Sherman method

I've included tampons and pads above because there can be a whole world of difference between conventional tampons such as commercial or organic tampons and sponge or soft tampons, or between commercial pads and cloth pads. Some women who dislike tampons love sponges for example.

Menstrual cups and softcups are obviously a major alternative to tampons and pads, internal like tampons but safer as they don't allow bacterial growth, damage the vaginal tissues, contain harmful substances, or prevent vaginal cleaning - thus no risks of infections, TSS, increased cramps, or dioxin exposure. Cups can thus be worn for up to 12 hours, with any flow, overnight, before your period, no need to alternate with pads, also menstrual cups can reduce cramps and don't leak like tampons.

If you start your period at school and don't have any menstrual supplies [tampons, pads, menstrual cups, softcups, etc.] then first stop is to ask your friends as most likely someone is going to be menstruating so have supplies, or maybe they will carry supplies with them just in case.

If your friends are a bust then you can ask a teacher or a school nurse, many will have spare menstrual products for this very situation, but even if they don't there will be a menstruating person somewhere in school that they can get menstrual supplies from discreetly to give to you. Some schools will also have a vending machine in the bathrooms for you to use too.

If you absolutely can't get menstrual supplies then you can always just use toilet paper, just fold it up and put it in your underwear, using a little extra to wrap around the crotch of your underwear to help keep the folded toilet paper in place to act as a makeshift menstrual pad.

If you don't have any tampons or pads then you could go to the store or ask another woman for supplies. If that isn't an option then you can use toilet paper, just fold into your underwear and then wrap another layer around the crotch of your underwear and the folded toilet paper to help hold it in place. You can also use folded cloth as a makeshift pad in your underwear, or even make your own cloth pads if you have a sewing machine (e.g. if you're at home when you have no supplies).

If you don't have tampons, pads or other menstrual products - firstly consider going to the store to buy what you need or asking someone else if they have any menstrual products you can take. If there is no access to menstrual products at all then you can use toilet paper or clean cloth folded and put into your underwear to act as a makeshift pad. If flow is light you can simply bleed, menstrual flow is no less hygienic than discharge so it's okay if you get blood on underwear, just wash correctly to prevent staining.

Are tampons only supposed to be worn in the water or do I have to wear pads?

Tampons can be worn anytime you have sufficient flow - except overnight while sleeping, or if you have a vaginal infection. You cannot wear pads for swimming as the blood won't flow down to the pad, the pad would be saturated with water so unable to absorb blood, plus the pad would come off.To swim on your period you can use tampons, soft tampons, menstrual sponges, menstrual cups, diaphragms, or softcups - menstrual cups are by far the best option, in general and for swimming.

Is yoga a bad idea when you have your period?

Yoga is a good meditation and breathing activity. It does not harm your body in any way if done properly. If you are expecting or you are on your period then use tampons depending on the flow. If you have trouble using tampons I suggest just using a nighttime pad or something in that range. Using a tampon and a thin pad at the same time can help you ensure security. Just remember to change regularly and enjoy yoga!

What is better a tampon or a pad?

It's a matter of opinion which is better between tampons and pads - although when you're using tampons you still have to use pads, also there are other options like menstrual cups and softcups.Pads are a lot simpler than tampons and don't have health risks like Toxic Shock Syndrome like tampons. Tampons are internal so more discreet but have various health risks which means they're also inconvenient as there are a lot of precautions you have to follow, including still using pads.
