What can you do if you opened the pool but the skimmer basket had a crack and some leaves are caught in the pump lowering the water flow?

Normally there are 2 baskets before the pump, One behind the skimmer and one on the pump. However If you only have the one basket then you will have rubbish caught in the impeller of the pump, You will have to take the pump apart and clean the impeller out.

Should you remove the skimmer basket when you vacuum a swimming pool?
No definitely not The skimmer basket is there to catch gross material like leaves etc you clean it out after and/or during vacuming the pool. There is another basket in front of the pool pump that also needs emptying occasionally. These baskets are there to protect the impeller of the pump. With most standard pools you must first take the skimmer basket out in order to connect the vac hose. This direct hookup will result in better suction at the vac head at the other end of the hose.

I clean my filter and skimmer basket and leave my pump running. I do not cover my pool. I guess it could depend on the weather in your area and if you have a problem with leaves getting in your pool.

Hum, the problem with the above answer is that once the skimmer basket if full and or the pump basket is full or any of the above solutions then what. Best bet is to use your telepole and a leaf skimmer that attaches to the pole ( you can also use a "leaf rake" or net as they are sometimes called. With this method you exert some labor and remove most of the leaves at one session.

Sounds kind of crazy but I've seen it done. Place something in the bottom of the skimmer basket attached to the pump. This person used some large leaves ( like red oak) and because the leaves where only slightly inhibiting the water flow, the pump pressure increased. The leaves don't dissolve and don't get into the impeller either. Cheap and crazy but it worked!
