Got to get "old school" with it.. remember having to "blow" on your Nintendo games to get them to work?
My daughters DS does the same thing from time to time.. system won't even read the game. take the cartridge out, blow air across the part of the cartridge with the copper contacts and reinsert the cartridge. try this a few times. If that don't work it may need to be serviced or game replaced

When the game was put in backwards it probably messed up the connections that read the DS games. You can try sticking a Q-tip with a tiny bit of alcohol into the game slot to clean it and if that does not work you will have to find someone that can repair it.
