i don't know if this shrub is large or small but if it has been in the ground for a very long time in the same place you need to root prune it. I also don't know what type of evergreen you mean in particular. Take a long sturdy knife, at the weep line of the shrub (out to where the furthest branch would hang) not below the plant. Now you want to take the knife and push it into the ground (careful!!) and in a sawing motion go all around the shrub. This will cut the roots and then form new roots. Next you can if you want, sprinkle a little epsom salts into the area where you severed the roots. Next tip, have you added anything to your soil? Most evergreens do not need fertilizer, some may depending on the soil, dig up around the outside of the plant, pour some Alaska fish fertilizer there following the directions. The only fertilizer I use on evergreens are fish fertilizer and beer. do not fertilize evergreens after Aug 15th. Sometimes coffee grounds help rhododendrens if you put around the outside of the shrub.
