When first diagnosed with pancreatitis, you shouldn't eat anything for 2 - 5 days. If hospitalized (as most people diagnosed with acute pancreatitis are), it is likely that the patient will be put on IV fluids. They should not ingest anything orally, including liquids, until it is deemed appropriate by their doctor. When pain and tenderness of the abdomen subside, you should begin a low to fat free diet. Examples of some foods to eat and avoid are listed bellow.

Try eating:

  • Fruits (no avocados, as they have a high fat content)
  • Vegetables
  • Whole wheat
  • Fish
  • Chicken breast
  • Boiled Eggs

Avoid:

  • Fatty meats (most red meats, unless 95%+ fat free)
  • Fried foods
  • Pastry items such as donuts, Croissants, etc.
  • Cheeses
  • Butter and margarine
  • Oil
  • Mayonnaise
  • Alcohol
  • Anything high in fat

After treatment, patients should stick to a low-to-fat free diet. Things like fruits (with the exception of avocado), vegetables, grains, fish, chicken breast and more are good foods to eat. Try to avoid foods such as red meats (unless they're 95+% fat free), oil, butter, cheese, milk (unless skim), anything fried or pastry items (such as croissants).

What kind of butter can you eat with pancreatitis?
