What can you eat when you have pancreatitis?

When acute pancreatitis is first diagnosed, patients are often admitted to the hospital for 2 - 5 days and are restricted to a clear liquid diet. The pancreas, while inflamed, is essentially having difficulty getting the digestive enzymes to the stomach. They remain trapped inside the pancreas instead. Once the condition begins to clear up (pain and tenderness in the abdomen have subsided) you should limit yourself to a low to fat free diet. Some examples of foods that can be eaten include; fruits (avoid avocado), veggies, whole wheats, fish, chicken and eggs. While red meats and junk food may seem obvious, some other things to avoid are butter, margarine, oils, cheese, whole or 2% milk and mayonnaise.

NO DAIRY PRODUCTS - Refrain from ingesting cream, butter, cheese and any other dairy foods. You should maintain a low-fat diet for the duration of your illness, and for six months after you are well. In case you don't know this, drinking anything containing alcohol is harmful to both the pancreas and the liver. You should completely abstain from alcohol.

I work at a hospital, and they have pamphlet that explain diets for just about every disease in the world. Go up to your local hospital, and ask them where you might find educational information. My hospital has a library, but usually the information staff will direct you where to go, also, there is probably a lot of info on the internet. I know that with Pancreatic disorders you want to stay away from coffee and caffeine. And with both Pancreatic and Hepatic disorders you want to altogether stop taking products containing Acetameophine (Tylenol is the trade name for Acetametophene, and Exedrine containes Acetameophene).
