Steam is very good for nasal congestion. The beneficial effect of chicken soup is related to the fact that if the soup is very hot, you will be inhaling the steam as you eat the soup. In my case, the answer is yes. I have asthma, and seasonal allergies. I have been on claritin for years, but this year i have had significant nasal allergies that the claritin hasn't prevented, such as post nasal drip, which then causes congestion and asthma flare ups. So my Pulmonologist just prescribed Atepro nasal spray to be taken daily along with claritin.
Take it to the vet
First of all, it would be best to determine what's causing it and whether there are other symptoms you may not have noticed, like dehydration. Is it seasonal allergies or could it be bordetella or distemper or flu? If you just treat the nasal symptoms, will that allow a serious illness to go unchecked? Honestly, you should have a vet check the dog out if at all possible. If not possible, at least call a vet's office and discuss it with them. Ask your local shelter if there is any assistance available for people who can't afford to take their dog to the vet. Apply for CareCredit if you need to.
A chest cold is a VIRUS so u cant treat it with antibiotics. If you do, any other bacterior in ur body will become imune to them and they will become 'Superbugs' which are almost impossible to treat. There are antiVIRALS which can help but chances are they wont cos viruses are constantly evolving and it wont help.
