Mercury, also known as "quicksilver", was used to give top hats a sheen back in the 18th or 19th century. It was also believe to have some medical purposes; it is found now that that is absolutely false and can be deadly. The vapors from the process in which top hats were coated also was known to make people suffer dementia, hence the term "Mad as a hatter" or "Mad Hatter" from Alice in Wonderland.
