Anything that is not metal. Glass, ceramic, wood should be alright.

Actually, wood would NOT be ok, it will in fact catch fire. Your best bet, is to simply buy a new microwave with a racking system that works for you. The racking in microwaves is made of metal, however, it doesn't spark because of the microwave output pattern. The racks in microwaves are specifically designed for the specific model of microwave.

But not everyone can just go out and buy a complete new microwave... Another, less expensive, solution is to use a small mixing bowl, made of glass that is suitable for use in a microwave, and place your food container on top of its base - after you have placed it upside-down, of course!

Why can your microwave oven have a metal shelf?

A microwave oven may include a metal component, like a shelf, if it is of the manufacturer's design. A manufacturer can properly design and place a metal component in a microwave oven by ensuring that it is not, and cannot become, a microwave antenna. If a metal component is designed by the manufacturer, specifically for its ovens, it is safe to use (per the instructions). Utensils, aluminum foil, gilding, and other metal objects act as antennae causing arcing and possible fires, and may cause damage to the oven.

Can a microwave be plugged into an extension cord?

Yes, as long as the extension cord is rated for the load. Most microwave ovens use 1000W or more, some less. A standard two wire extension cord would be unsafe. There are, however, extension cords which have the proper gauge of wire and the necessary 3-prong outlets which a microwave would need to operate safely.
