Most jewelry cleaners will do the trick and the best place to buy it is at any department store in the jewelry department. I just bought a sonic jewelry cleaner as I have some special stones in some rings and it works wonders and not at all messy or smelly.

  • Most glued in and prong set stones can be safely cleaned with a soft toothbrush dampened (not saturated) with alcohol (no, not booze, the rubbing kind), which dries very quickly. The exception would be faux pearls and aurora borealis stones, which might have their a/b finish scratched by the bristles of the toothbrush. For those I recommend the lens cleaning wipes used on glasses because they won't scratch the finish.
  • Unfoiled stones in open back settings can get a build up of dirt and grime on the underside that can be difficult (or impossible) to reach with with a toothbrush or even a Q-tip. For these I recommend using pressurized steam (I use a Eureka Enviro Steamer).
  • After cleaning using any method that uses a liquid of any kind, pat dry then follow with a blow dryer on a low setting to make sure all moisture is gone. Moisture is the enemy of costume jewelry.

What ingrediant is used to clean jewelry?

For platinum or gold, use Mr. Clean, water, and ammonia. This is what jewelers use in their ultra sonic to clean jewelry and is safe for all types of jewelry. Half Mr. Clean and water with just a little ammonia. Sterling jewelry is cleaned using either a sterling jewelry dip or baking soda and water as a paste. I would not use toothpaste. Toothpaste is abrasive and can ruin a high polish.
