A lot depends on the situation. Do you go to the legal offices to do your work or do you do work from your home? If you work at an office and have use of their equipment and facilities, you don't have anything of any substance to deduct. If at home, you may be able to deduct the square feet of office space dedicated to the job. Warning, if you own your home and have a mortgage, you are already deducting interest that covers the entire space. If you drive to locations beyond the office, you can deduct that mileage. Driving from home to work is not considered deductible. You can deduct costs of doing work such as supplies, and if you require special "machines like fax, special computer programs, sep. phone lines, out of town travel expenses, those are deductible. You'll find that it might be hard to come up with enough items to make any difference in your taxes. You also have to file quarterly tax estimates of you are an independent contractor.
