Quite a few people seem to be convinced that LBJ was buried in an oak casket, maybe because they have seen pictures of his graveside under a group of oak trees on his farm in the Texas Hill Country. But, as a matter of fact, he was buried in velvet lined silver-gray metal casket with dark swing bar handles manufactured by the (former) Belmont Casket Company of Columbus, Ohio. The round corner design of timeless simplicity was probably the "Columbus" model of the renown company, which had the reputation of producing stylish caskets of high quality. Belmont had also manufactured the solid bronze "Masterpiece" casket of Marilyn Monroe, but the company was first of all famous for its lead coated steel caskets, which had a corrosion resistant property. Already President Woodrow Wilson had been buried in a steel casket made by the Belmont company.

Was there a reason J Edgar Hoovers casket was lined in lead?

To protect his body in the event of nuclear war. A more simply reason might be that, perhaps, he was buried in a Belmont casket. The (former) Belmont Casket Company of Columbus, Ohio was famous for its lead coated steel caskets. The lead coating had an anti-corrosion effect, giving the carbon steel properties similar to that of stainless steel. President Lyndon B. Johnson, e.g., was buried in a Belmont lead coated steel casket. Pictures of Hoover's funeral seem to indicate that he might have been buried in one of the double lid Belmont "Masterpiece" caskets, the top of the line model of the company. A solid bronze type of the "Masterpiece" casket (with more ornamental caskets handles than those of J. Edgar's casket) was used for the burial of Marilyn Monroe.

What casket was President Coolidge buried in?

When former President Calvin Coolidge died in 1933, he was buried in a polished solid bronze casket featuring a round corner design. It had been manufactured by the Elgin Metal Casket Company of Elgin, Ill., which had started building caskets in 1928 and which decades later provided the bronze casket in which President Kennedy was taken from Dallas to Washington. The top of the Coolidge casket had a hinged cap design: it had separately hinged bronze panels and was equipped with a hermetically sealing full length inner oval plate glass lid. Pictures of the casket at the viewing and at the graveside are available on the Internet.

What president was buried in a ninety five dollar sample casket?

If not in a $ 95 casket, there was at least one president who was buried in a simple $ 195 casket: Dwight D. Eisenhower. His soldier's casket had a rectangular state design and was made of steel with stationary bar handles. The outer color was silver-gray. The interior consisted of ivory colored crepe. At the time of President Eisenhower's death (1969), the US government provided this casket at a price of $ 80 for the funeral of its active or retired soldiers. The former president had expressed his will to be buried in one of these simple caskets. Nevertheless, he got a "special edition" because the standard military casket was custom equipped for him with an inner full length oval glass lid to give it the feature of a hermetical seal, making it air and water tight. The additional price for this extra feature was $ 115. Thus, Dwight D. Eisenhower was buried in a $ 195 casket.

Which American President was buried in the most expensive casket?

Probably Franklin D. Roosevelt, who - contrary to his wishes - was buried in a rare semiprecious metal casket. But Ronald Reagan, who was put to rest in a luxurious hardwood casket, is also a candidate. Whose casket was the more expensive one is difficult to determine because of the problems involved in comparing prices over a long period of time.

Why did president Johnson take office?

As Vice-President, according to our Constitution, when President Kennedy was pronounced dead, Johnson automatically became president, and he was sworn in on the same aircraft that Kennedy and his staff flew to Dallas in the previous day. Whatever aircraft the President happens to be on, carries the designation "Air Force One", and there is a famous photograph that shows Jackie Kennedy, still in blood soaked clothing, and Lyndon Johnson, standing beside the casket that contained the remains of JFK, as Johnson was sworn in aboard the jet liner that had carried the Kennedy's and their staff to Dallas, before they even left the Dallas airport. Johnson said he wanted to get sworn in quickly, so as to remove any argument as to who was then President, back in Washington DC.
