As most of the generals in the US Civil War all graduated from West Point, it is not surprising that each side in the war used similar tactics on the battlefield. Also, many commanders in the war had participated with each other in the Mexican War. Now tactics and strategies are totally different and that is where each side used different models in terms of overall strategy. With that said, here is an example of similar battle field tactics worked for each side. The generals used essentially the same method of control of forces available for the transfer of troops needed to be positioned for defending against the concentration of force that the enemy was presenting. Both high commands relied heavily on the local commanders for an estimate of their needs, not only for reinforcements to meet expected enemy attacks. In the same manner if a field commander saw the opportunity to form a concentration against the enemy, the high command would trust their commanders to correctly assess the situation.

All of this, however, would be dependent on the particular strategy they were working to achieve.
