There has been no increase in the number of elements, it's just that people discovered ones that were unknown.

The only exception is the use of nuclear reactions (in accelerators, reactors, and bombs) to create technetium, promethium, and the transuranics. But many of these except for extreme transuranics already existed on earth but at such small trace levels they were unknown until long after they had been artificially made and measured.

Down the group, atomic radius increases. This is due to increase in number of shells.

What trend in atomic radius do you see as you go down a group on the periodic?

The atomic radius of elements increases as you go down a group. This increase in radius as you go down a period is primarily caused by the increasing principal quantum number of the outer electron shells.

Why does the size of the elements increase down a group?

The atomic numbers of the elements down a group increase. this means, more electrons. More electrons mean more shells. More shells mean larger radius. Larger radius is nothing but larger size. Thus, the number of electrons or shells is the reason why the size of the atom of elements increase down the group.
