This notice of a Japanese sub being so close came to late to Pearl Harbor commanders that we were not able to be prepared for the devastating air attack that was on its way. A Japanese midget sub was spotted by the USS Ward and was sunk about an hour before the first wave of enemy aircraft.The midget subs were to lead the attack. Seems kinda crazy to me and it turnedout that it was. Recently this sub has been found, complete with a hole throughthe Conning Tower. Just as the gun crew of the USS Ward said they had done!

No, the real reason for Japan's attack (on the US, the British Empire & the Dutch) was the Japanese Army's obsession with their on-going brutal conquest of China. The United States had been taking diplomatic and economic steps against Japan for several years to convince (or force) the Japanese to end their war of conquest in Asia. One of those economic steps was a US Oil Embargo (no US sales of oil to Japan). The Japanese Army actually controlled the Japanese Government since the early 1930's. The Japanese Army refused to end its war of conquest & extreme brutality in China.

Beyond China, the Japanese Army had plans to take advantage of the weakness of the British, French, Dutch & Soviet Union in Asia because of Hitler's conquests in Europe. The Japanese wanted to be free of American interference, and create a vast Asian empire that would have eventually included China, eastern Siberia, Mongolia, Korea, Formosa, Indo-China, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Philippines, Guam, Wake Island, & New Guinea; and possibly India.

The Japanese military thought that the best way to keep the United States from interfering in their plans in Asia, was to deliver a surprise attack on various US bases throughout the Pacific to do as much damage to the US Military capability in the Pacific. At Pearl Harbor, they intended to sink as many battleships, cruisers & aircraft carriers as possible. At Manila they intended to follow-up with an invasion and capture of the Philippines. At Wake Island they intended to seize the island. The Japanese also attacked the bases, ships & troops of the British Empire. All this was intended to persuade the United States & Britain to negotiate a settlement giving the Japanese most of the western Pacific territories, and most of Asia. They hoped that the US & Britain would not want to fight a prolonged & costly war in Asia to liberate what territory the Japanese could capture in the first six months of the war.

Japan invaded China and many Americans were upset by this and protested. Japanese leaders requested a meeting with FDR, and he told them to pull out of Japan. FDR also did not want Japan to expand so he cut off all trade with them. The Japanese wanted to take over half the worlds population and to do so they needed to take out American naval forces in the Pacific.

Japan began their conflict with the U.S. when the U.S. cut off trade to them for their refusal to cease their invasion of china. With only about nine months worth of supplies left to fuel their war effort, the Japanese demanded control of the Philippines to get their minerals, fuels, rubber, etc. When the U.S. refused, American analysts assumed they would take it by force and stepped up their pacific fleet. What they did not realize was that carriers with roughly 240 torpedo bombers and fighters was creeping ever so closer to the Hawaiian islands. On December 7, 1941 a radar operator noticed a massive concentration of enemy aircraft but it was too late. The aftermath is obvious and the next day the Philippines fell to Japanese invasion, launching a dormant giant into the second great war.

So basically attacked because supplies were limited unless the Japanese took pacific islands at their leisure which the united states was fully against.
