I'm not sure but I think:

the economy changed in west Europe because:

- agricultural land was passing out and the late roman system of land taxes were also collapsing. the coinage system broke down and changed from gold to silver.

the was also a rapid increase of monasteries. in 597 40 monks were send to England by pope Gregory & by end 7th century whole England laid in the roman boundries. the bouwindustrie monks went to frisia and Saxony, so did the Frankish monks.

pope Gregory had made an alliance with Benedictines monasteries. and therefore frisia and Germany were both in the catholic church now. this was the groundwork for the alliance between the papacy and the Frankish.

in short: the catholic church and its monasteries.

What events caused the dark ages in Western Europe and why did Western Europe have a dark age?

The dark ages were a period of time in Western Europe, prior to 1000 AD, known as such because of the general lack of highly centralized government as was known under the Roman rule. This was caused by a falling apart of the Roman empire, which was caused by a number of circumstances, one being the pressures put on the Roman Empire by migratory tribes from eastern Europe (the Huns, Vandals, Visigoth, etc.). The dark ages were categorized by localized government, lower trade, some loss of scholarship, and migratory movement of people groups.
