Britain would tax the colonists from across the ocean for their tea, sugar, and any printed things. Some people became Patriots and wanted a war. But others who were Tories were still loyal to the king of England at the time. Also, the colonists had no representatives. So the British would pass rules and laws that the colonists had no say in.
