The battle of Actium was the culmination of the animosity between Octavian and Antony. The causes go back 13 years to Octavian's arrival in Rome after Caesar's assassination. The two men never got along even though they cooperated politically for a while. Antony's conduct in the east and his alliance with Cleopatra were the excuse that Octavian needed to have the senate declare war.
