Tensions between Octavian and Antony had been building since 44 BC/BCE. By all accounts, Octavian declared war on Antony & Cleopatra in 32 BC/BCE. Who would become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire was to be decided by the Battle of Actium. Although Antony still had military resources, his suicide and the suicide of Cleopatra ended the dispute between Octavian & Antony.

What convinced Octavian to declare war on Antony?

There was not one thing that convinced Octavian to make war on Antony, but a culmination of many things. Some of them were personal dislike, Antony's callous treatment of Octavian's sister, the contest for both political and military power and most of all, Antony's giving Roman territory to Cleopatra.

What can you tell me about Marc Antony and Cleopatra?

Why was cleopatra important to rome?

Cleopatra was not so much important to Rome as she was to Octavian. She was the tool that Octavian was able to use against Antony and to wage the war against him. By accusing Cleopatra of corrupting Antony, Octavian was able to get the senate to declare war against her. In reality this war was against Antony for sole rule, but Octavian had to avoid all semblance of a civil war and Cleopatra and her conduct with Antony was the perfect opportunity for him.

Why did Octavian declare war on Marc Antony and Cleopatra?

Several reasons led up to the war between Octavian and Antony and Cleopatra, but the main reason was power. Both men were in a power struggle for supremacy in Rome. Antony, by openly entering into a political alliance with Cleopatra played right into Octavian's hands. Cleopatra herself, by seducing Antony, set herself up as a tool for Octavian to use in discrediting Antony. The power struggle continued and culminated in Octavian's victory at Actium.

Why did Augustus go to war against Cleopatra?

Augustus, or Octavian, as he was known at the time, had the senate declare war against Cleopatra, but in reality he was going to war against Antony. To understand this, you have to know a little of the background. Octavian and Antony never really got along from day one. They formed a political alliance, but it was a rocky one, with each man jostling for power until it came to the point of war. However, Octavian had to be careful that when he asked the senate to declare war, it was not a civil war, which it would be if he declared war on Antony. So he had them to declare war on Cleopatra, a foreigner.

Why did Augustus declare war on Cleopatra?

Augustus or Octavian as he was known at the time, had the senate declare war on Cleopatra because, as they all believed, she had a degrading influence on Marc Antony and was, through him, trying to undermine Rome. However the reality of the situation was that Antony and Octavian were in a struggle for supreme power. Octavian could not declare war on Antony as he would be starting another civil war and the people were sick of Roman fighting Roman. His troops might not be loyal if this happened. So, by declaring war on Cleopatra, a foreigner, he could justify his reasons for war, even though he and most of Rome knew he would be fighting Antony.
