The Aztec Empire finally fell in 1821. The last emperor Cuauhtémoc was finally killed in 1825 by Cortez. The empire was finally defeated when, after being besieged by the Spaniards. The Spaniards had brought the epidemic of small pox with them from Europe and acted as carriers. When the Spaniards had been invited into Tenochtitlan when they first arrived, the Aztecs had caught the disease off them and this finally caused their downfall. As around 80 % of the population where killed by small pox. This is probably one of the major reasons of the empire's downfall. One Aztec city which was burnt down was rebuilt and called Mexico City.
