Great Britain needed to pay for its recent war (the seven years war-known in America as the French and Indian War) so they started adding new taxes to the colonies to raise the funds-the sugar act and the stamp act. Also before this Great Britain had not really noticed the colonies at all and the colonies were used to governing themselves. The biggest hit though was that because of the new law applied after the French and Indian War-stating that no one may settle west of the Appalachians, Britain had soldiers quartered in colonists homes. The soldiers also took colonists jobs-this angered colonists that they were making less money and now had to support a soldier when there was not a war, the colonists would bicker publicly with the soldiers. One day there was an extremely nasty fight, when British soldiers shot and killed 5 colonists- The Boston Massacre, revolts took off from there
