Best Answer

It was caused by rock explosions, several hundreds of metres underground.

This rock are under stress which remain balanced if that natural balance is unaltered. When materials from inside the mine are extracted that balance is destroyed and if proper measures aren't taken, that stress may produce rock explosions.

The safety measures in the mine were, at least, mediocre. More than 80 accidents had happen before 2010. It was the main reason which it was closed in 2007, but it was re-opened in 2008.
