Hmm, I had a similar problem with my Ranger. It had an untraceable electrical problem, and we sold it for scrap.
Symptoms include backfiring, severe loss of RPM before backfiring, dying unexpectedly, just about everything it shouldn't do.
How bad is the sputter? Does it sputter, or does it sound like a large dying animal?

There is a problem with the emissions system.
It is mounted just above the crankshaft pulley on the front of the engine.It is mounted just above the crankshaft pulley on the front of the engine.

The number is on the block and isjust above where the gearbox connects to the block
Fault in the Crankshaft position sensor
It's at the front centre of engine ,just above the starter..
It is labeled under the hood on the lip above the engine fan.
I would suspect the map sensor is bad.
You'll Blow Your Engine You can add a turbo to any engine but as stated above. You need to know what you are doing, it is not a job for amateurs
Could be a worn out waterpump.
