I have a Sears Craftsman LT 1000 17 Horsepower Kohler engine, and I had the same problem. I used some gasoline additive as well, check your oil level. It appears if the oil level is low the engine heats up and shuts down. I believe it is a safety mechanism, so it saves your engine. So add some oil, maybe a little gasoline additive and you should be good to go!
The engine has a drain plug located on the engine block. Look closely and you will find it.

Craftsman lawn tractor with 22hp kohler engine uses a fram pf-53
Husqvarna makes it. Briggs&Stratten Platinum engine. General Transmission Element V transmission.
Depending on the model it may not have one. If its a Briggs engine and you don't see it then it probably doesnt have one.
A dirty spark plug can cause your lawn tractor engine to run at high RPM. A bad fuel filter can also cause this.
There are factors that will effect this answer. What model the tractor is, what engine it has, what transmission, what condition, where it is being sold, what time of year it is being sold etc... Right now, a typical Craftsman L-1000 in that year range and in good shape will sell for around 300-350 here in Cincinnati, Ohio.
A 5hp craftsman engine has a compresson of 135psi
There is no way to provide you with this information. Sears used several model numbers for the same tractor designation throughout the model run. You will need to look for the model number on your tractor...it may be under the seat, on the frame or under the hood (on the underside of the hood)
Remove the battery cable on the side of the starter. Then remove the two bolts holding it onto the engine. Once you have your new one just reverse those steps.

Usually around a quart depending on what make engine it is. Once you get a quart in it you should be able to see it on the dipstick and ad more until it gets to the full line.
