the reason you are having these noises is your steering column and may also be your brakes
Check the wheel bearings. Jack the car up securely and hold each wheel at 'quarter to three' and 'half past the hour' and try wobbling them. If there's any play you need to get the wheel bearings replaced. It can be a bit tricky to DIY so I'd recommend getting a garage to do it, but shop around for prices. The part is cheap so you're mainly paying for labour. Kwik-Fit wanted £105 (they magically dropped this to £55.85 after I told them my best price so far was £60). In the end I got it done for £40 including the part.
I'd try changing tires, worked for me.

Bad wheel bearings usually cause a grinding noise, and are known to only cause it when turning.
