You know, my '96 has the same exact problem. If I didn't know better, I'd think that some smart a** had stashed an empty beer bottle back there somewhere, just to vex me. I guess I should pull that carpet piece completely out and have a good look around.
I had my mechanic take a look back there. She checked the suspension, the fuel filler tube and anything else in the area that might look suspicious. All looked OK and she pronounced it safe to drive.
My car begins to make that noise as soon as the car starts to move, even very slowly. After a couple of miles, I don't notice it any more.
Still, it makes me a little crazy. It shouldn't do that.

I've since been told by another mechanic who I trust, that it's a broken
strut shock. He says that they can look just fine, but will knock like
that when you drive. I'm going to have mine checked/replaced.
